Are high-quality fertilizers worth the money?

High-quality fertilizer products are not at the top of most people’s shopping lists. In fact, all too often we search “what’s the cheapest fertilizer?” on the internet, head to our local department store, and buy whatever brand we were told to buy. Unfortunately, buying cheap fertilizer products isn’t always the best route.
What to look for in a fertilizer
Effective fertilizer products reduce turf disease, improve weed control, and provide thick, lush turf. If the fertilizers you’re using currently or you’ve used in the past haven’t delivered results, it’s time to pull out the “big guns.” Your lawn is hungry for nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus. And if your lawn is new, you need a fertilizer that has all three.
Additionally, it’s good to keep your soil’s pH at a healthy level. There are ways to test your soil’s pH. Depending on how acidic or alkaline it is, you may need to lay down a different type of fertilizer to balance things out.
When to fertilize
While there are times throughout the year that could call for fertilization, the best time to fertilize is in the spring. You have to be careful when you fertilize in the spring, though, as too early or too late will cause the fertilizer to be ineffective. And to some extent, each lawn is different and has different needs. Consult a lawn care professional about the benefits of high-quality fertilizer products and what the best time for application is.
